How to get to UT Knoxville?
The University of Tennessee Knoxville campus is located close to the city center of Knoxville, Tennessee. The closest airport is McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), about 20 miles south of downtown Knoxville. Other possible airports include Nashville International Airport (BNA) (about three hours drive west) and Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) (about two hours drive south).
We recommend flying into TYS. For international travelers, the major entry ports to the US with good connections are Washington Dulles (IAD), Chicago (ORD) or Houston (IAH) for airlines on the Star Alliance network (United, Swiss, Lufthansa); these airports have at least four flights a day to TYS. Atlanta (ATL) is the best entry point for SkyMiles airlines (Delta, KLM, Air France); there are eight flights per day from Atlanta to TYS. Charlotte (CLT) is the hub for OneWorld airline partners (American, British Airways, Japan Airlines). From Charlotte there are also at least four flights per day to TYS.
If you plan to stay in one of the hotels in the downtown Knoxville area, we strongly recommend to not rent a car. Instead take a taxi or drive share from TYS into the city and to your hotel. Downtown Knoxville is quaint and very walkable, with a plethora of dining options for all tastes available right next to each other.
The conference venue is less than 20 minutes walking distance from the recommended hotels. The end of August in Knoxville is usually sunny 85F (29C) weather during the day, with just a few rain days on average. If you are able to walk, we really do not believe you need a car for a few days in Knoxville!
