The sPHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is going through its final assembly and is planned to take the first collision data in less than one year. Built around a 1.4 T superconducting magnet, the detector stack includes high precision vertexing and tracking detectors surrounded by the EM and hadronic calorimeters. sPHENIX will enable the precision measurements of heavy flavor observables in the heavy ion and polarized nucleon collisions, covering unexplored channels and kinematic regions at RHIC, and providing an overlap with LHC. The physics program, new opportunities, and open high-impact development tasks will be discussed in this talk.
