A meeting is being held at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) on October 20 and 21, 2022, to introduce the ALPHA (Axion Longitudinal Plasma HAloscope) experiment currently in the R&D and preliminary design stage.
The ALPHA experiment is based on the concept of using a metamaterial resonator in lieu of a conventional microwave cavity, capable of reaching much higher frequencies in a large volume format, corresponding to predictions for the mass of the post-inflation axion. Theoretical and experimental work by the ALPHA R&D consortium over the past three years has been very encouraging, and has prepared for the transition to a full-scale experiment. ORNL is in the process of procuring a large volume 13-Tesla magnet from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, developed by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, for use in this experiment.

We have funds to support travel costs, but any request for travel support has to be received by September 16, 2022, but the earlier the better. All foreign nationals that intend to attend in person will have to notify us before September 16, 2022, to be able to get access to the ORNL site. Requests for travel support and site access should be sent to triplettkm@ornl.gov with copy to demarteau@ornl.gov.
